WHAT IS ROLL WITH IT? RWI is a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to providing year-round sports training, competition, and recreation in a variety of wheelchair sports for individuals with physical disabilities. Giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendships with their families, other wheelchair athletes and the community.
WHAT WE DO RWI recruits and develops wheelchair athletic teams in MN and neighboring states for adults and children with permanent physical disabilities RWI assists current and future wheelchair athletic teams and/or players RWI raises money for sport wheelchairs, uniforms, equipment, officials compensation, travel costs to attend regional and national competitions
OUR MISSION RWI is dedicated to
maximize the potential of individuals with physical disabilities through sports and
recreation. - provide sport and recreation opportunities comparable to those provided for the non-disabled. -promote character development and growth, mentorship, healthy lifestyles and self-sufficiency. -develop positive community awareness and support and to reach all people with a disability -grow, expand and establish RWI teams across the state
GOALS To develop and create a sports program to provide opportunities for all ability levels (recreational and competitive), such as annual wheelchair basketball exhibitions, wheelchair athletic tournaments, wheelchair sports summer camp for beginner, intermediate and experienced participants throughout MN and neighboring states To organize fundraising events, such as basketball tournaments, raffles, and school presentations to promote and assist wheelchair athletics To host a junior, national and international wheelchair sporting event To provide informational services on wheelchair athletics through a range of publications and a website, which will include disability awareness training, as well as the education and training of athletes, officials, and volunteers To build an adapted sports facility in the metro area for all athletes with disabilities to use on a daily basis for training, practices, games, tournaments, and fundraising
CHALLENGES Sports wheelchairs are approximately $2,500-$3,000 each There are very few wheelchair teams in MN and neighboring states, which limits several individuals with disabilities the chance to play Wheelchair teams must travel out of state for many tournaments and games because of the shortage of teams in MN, which is more financially demanding on families compared to non-disabled athletes Some individuals have to travel several hours just to attend a team practice |
