In Loving Memory of Michael Zimanske
(August 1, 1991-March 10, 2005) At age 7, Michael was diagnosed with Schimke Immeousis Dysplasia - a rare genetic syndrome that encompassed five different areas of his body: kidney disease, growth issues, vascular abnormalities, hip/joint dysfunction, and freckled macules on his upper body. Michael transitioned into a wheelchair the spring of 2000 at age eight. It brought many changes and challenges not only to Michael, but his entire family. However, Michael pressed forward in meeting these challenges never allowing the wheelchair to slow him down. In the fall of 2000, he joined the MN Royals wheelchair basketball team which gave him the opportunity to still foster his competitive spirit and need for speed. Through many ups and downs relating to his medical condition, wheelchair basketball was the constant in his life. After a very hard, long road of surgeries, infections, and numerous hospital stays, we lost our Michael in March of 2005. We reflect on the lessons that Michael taught us about life and family by his example as well as lessons on and off the basketball court.
