Wheelchair Athletics: Is it for you?
Before answering that question, there is one important thing you need to know first. You do NOT have to be confined to a wheelchair! A person can participate in wheelchair athletics as long as they have a permanent physical disability that limits their participation in able-bodied sports. They may have an amputation, have a significant orthopedic problem, or have some disease or disability (such as spina bifida or CP) that restricts their movement. In most cases, no disability is too severe to participate or be involved in some way. Wheelchair athletics can be fast paced, challenging, and competitive, but also recreational. It provides an opportunity to exercise, make new friends, develop social and teamwork skills, increase confidence, and to have fun!
Roll With It has developed a Saint Cloud Area wheelchair basketball team called the St. Cloud Cyclones which began practicing in the Fall of 2004 and have expanded to other sports like archery, bowling, power soccer and alpine skiing. We are always looking for more players! If you, or someone you know, would be interested in getting involved with wheelchair basketball or any other sport, please contact Roll With It Director, Heidi Schwichtenberg, at 320.743.5339 or email at hammerhoops@hotmail.com.
